Satellite by Dave Matthews Band

Satellite lyrics

Satellite in my eyes

Like a diamond in the sky

How I wonder

Satellite strung from the moon

And the world your balloon

Peeping Tom for the mother station

Winter's cold spring erases

And the calm away by the storm is chasen

Everything good needs replacing

Look up, look down, all around, hey satellite

Satellite headlines read

Someone's secrets you've seen

Eyes and ears have been

Satellite dish in my yard

Tell me more, tell me more

Who's the king of your Satellite Castle?

Winter's cold spring erases

And the calm away by the storm is chasen

Everything good needs replacing

Look up, look down, all around, hey satellite

Rest high above the clouds no restriction

Television we bounce round the world

And while I spend these hours

Five senses reelingI laugh about the weatherman's satellite eyes

Satellite in my eyes

Like a diamond in the sky

How I wonder

Satellite strung from the moon

And the world your balloon

Peeping Tom for the mother station

Winter's cold spring erases

And the calm away by the storm is chasen

Everything good needs replacing

Look up, look down, all around, hey satellite

Rest high above the clouds no restriction

Television we bounce round the world

And while I spend these hours

Five senses reeling

I laugh about the weatherman's satellite eyes

Dave Matthews Band, or DMB for short, is an all-American rock band that formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991. DMB includes the following members: guitarist and singer Dave Matthews, bassist Stefan Lessard, violinist Boyd Tinsley, and drummer Carter Beauford, and the recently deceased saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who died in August of 2008 and now in his place is Jeff Coffin. Dave Matthews, was a bartender in Charlottesville, when he met a lawyer in early November of 1990. This lawyer, or Ross Hoffman, convinced Dave that he should gang up with a few friends and start a band. The band later signed a deal with RCA (US) records and has been a hit since 1991. Dave Matthews Band has sold over 31 million units in the United States alone, putting them in the top 100 highest selling music acts of all-time! One of their more popular, beloved songs is “Satellite”.

“Satellite”, by DMB has many poetic devices to be praised for. For example in lines 4-6 “Satellite strung from the moon. And the world your balloon, Peeping Tom for the mother station,” these lines are both personification and pun. This is because the moon can’t actually have the world as its balloon, and Peeping Tom is a pun referring to the curiosity of life on the earth, or on the moon. Another poetic device I so graciously found was in lines 13&14, “Eyes and ears have been, Satellite dish in my yard, Tell me more tell me more,” this is both a use of personification and local color. It is local color because of the gossip being spread, and personification because a satellite can’t actually tell you what is going on, but a radio can from a satellite. Among many other uses of poetic devices, the one that really struck me, was found in lines of the last stanza, “Rest high above the clouds no restriction, television we bounce round the world, and while I spend these hours, five senses reeling, I laugh about the weatherman's satellite eyes,” these last lines are motif’s reinforcing the theme of world production in both technology and the need for gossip, which of course is a universal theme.

All-in-all, DMB is clearly one of the greatest American bands of all time. Not only is it proven by their dedicated fans, but it also is shown by the fact that they are on the top 100 highest selling music acts of all-time! And thanks to their brilliance, “Satellite” definitely reinforces the fact that they are no-less the great Dave Matthews Band!

My Wish by Rascal Flatts

I hope the days come easy and the moments pass slow,
and each road leads you where you want to go,
and if you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.
and if one door opens to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walkin' 'til you find the window,
if it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile,
more than anything, more than anything,
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
and while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.
I hope you never look back, but ya never forget,
all the ones who love you, in the place you left,
I hope you always forgive, and you never regret,
and you help somebody every chance you get,
Oh, you find God's grace, in every mistake,
and you always give more then you take.
But more than anything,
Yeah, and more than anything,
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it,
to your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
and while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.
Yeah this is my wish o0o0o0o0o0o0
I hope you know somebody loves you
may all your dreams stay big

Rascal Flatts is perhaps one of the single best country groups of all time. The band consists of: Gary LeVox (lead vocals), his cousin Jay DeMarcus (bass guitar, keyboard, vocals), and their good friend Joe Don Roony (lead guitar, vocals). The band started out as a typical unknown band, but finally broke through in 1999 when they were signed with Lyric Street Records. In 2000 the band made their debut with their first song “Prayin’ For Daylight”, that made its way up to the number 3 spot on Billboard country charts. And since then they have sold over 5 million cds just in the U.S.! And they covered “Life is a Highway” for the 2006 Disney movie Cars. One of their least popular, but highly inspiring songs is “My Wish”.

“My Wish”, has many poetic device usages through out the song. One of the most used is imagery. For example in lines 1-7, “I hope the days come easy and the moments pass slow, and each road leads you where you want to go, and if you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose, I hope you choose the one that means the most to you. and if one door opens to another door closed,I hope you keep on walkin' 'til you find the window.” These lines give the listener the images of some memories, and the choices the future holds. Another poetic quality that lines 1-4 obtain is an allusion to life, because in life you will have to make choices, and you do want every decision to lead you to where you long to be. Another poetic device found is personification like in lines 7&8 “if it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile.” This is personification because a smile can’t truly have warmth, however, the singer is trying to tell the listener to always look on the bright-side of things, and to try to inspire others.
So clearly “My Wish”, is inspiring to many people, along with many other of Rascal Flatts songs. “My Wish” is meant for the listener to count their blessings of friends, memories, somewhere to always go back, and the promising future that they mold with their own hands. The question is, how will it inspire you?

Analysis

Any Other Wolrd by Mika

In Any Other World
You Could Tell The Difference
And Let It All Unfurl
Into Broken Remenents
Smile Like You Mean It
And Let Yourself Let Go
Cause It's All In The Hands Of A Bitter, Bitter Man
Say Goodbye To The World You Thought You Lived In
Take A Bow, Play The Part Of A Lonely Lonely Heart
Say Goodbye To The World You Thought You Lived In
To The World You Thought You Lived In
I Tried To Live AloneBut Lonely Is Lonely, Alone
So Human As I Am
I Had To Give Up My Defences
So I Smiled And Tried To Mean It
To Let Myself Let Go
Cause It's All In The Hands Of A Bitter, Bitter Man
Say Goodbye To The World You Thought You Lived In
Take A Bow, Play The Part Of A Lonley Lonley Heart
Say Goodbye To The World You Thought You Lived In
To The World You Thought You Lived In
Cause It's All In The Hands Of A Bitter, Bitter Man
Say Goodbye To The World You Thought You Lived In
Take A Bow, Play The Part Of A ...Say Goodbye To The World You Thought You Lived In
To The World You Thought You Lived In
Say Goodbye To The World You Thought You Lived In [x2]
Say Goodbye
In Any Other World
You Could Tell The Difference

Mika, or as his birth certificate states “Michael Holbrook Penniman”, was born in Beirut, Lebanon on August 18, 1983. He was the third out of five children, his mother was Lebanonese however, his father was American. When Mika was only a year old his family was forced to move from Lebanon because of the war and moved out to Paris. Through out Mika’s life he loved music, and interestingly, after listening to “Heart-shaped Box” by Nirvana he wrote his first song called “Angry” which he looks back to now as an ‘awful’ piano instrumental. Soon after his family moved to London, here at the new school he attended called ‘Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle’he claims he was continuously harrassed and bullied because of his dyslexia. But later on in life he over came that and went on to Westminister School and the Royal College of Music, where he went to his first album was recorded at Casablanca Records. For his fame his name was altered to “Mica”, which he soon after switched the ‘c’ to a ‘k’ to get the one and only Mika! This particular song by Mika called “Any Other World”, on his album “Life in Cartoon Motion”, has to be the one song that stickes out from the others. While his other songs are upbeat, and the kind of songs you want to get up and dance to, “Any Other World” happens to be one of the songs that you would have to really listen openminded to get the full picture of what he is giving you. Although this song is sad, and less popular than his more energetic songs, I believe that it should be applauded for its several uses of poetic devices.

For example, lines 5&6 “Smile Like You Mean ItAnd Let Yourself Let Go”, is indeed a trite cliché, it makes the song more powerful by him asking the listener to just let everything go, and to take what you have and love it. Another poetic device continually shown through out this song is allusion, like in line 7 “Cause It's All In The Hands Of A Bitter, Bitter Man”, this is relating to a God or a power that everyone else is inferior to, but calling this power bitter also says that mika is either sad, disappointed, or just uses God as a scapegoat to his unfair life. Along with the others there includes imagery and local color, as shown in line 9 “Take A Bow, Play The Part Of A Lonely Lonely Heart”, this is both an imagery because he is telling you to do so, but also local color because everyone has felt lonely, and sad. One last poetic device in this song is an alussion, as seen in the forth to last line in the song “Say Goodbye To The World You Thought You Lived In”, although it is unsure if he is refurring to killing himself or just asking you to change your point of view it is none of the less and alussion to both.

All-in-all, Mika is life changing. He can relate to his listeners in a majority of his songs and even in this song it has a universal relevence to everyone’s sadness. So take Mika’s advice, change your view, and say good bye to the world you thought you lived in.
